What does disinfection actually mean?

We are all familiar with disinfection from healthcare facilities, surface cleaning, or privately from the small bottle of disinfectant in our bags. But what does the term disinfection actually mean, and why is it so important?

What is disinfection?

Disinfection refers to the targeted reduction or elimination of pathogenic microorganisms such as:

  • 🦠 Bacteria
  • 🧫 Viruses
  • 🍄 Mushrooms

The use of disinfectants or disinfection procedures reduces the bacterial count to such an extent that infection can no longer be triggered.

This means that microorganisms may still be present after disinfection, but in such small quantities that they no longer pose a risk.

Disinfection is not the same as sterilization.

A common misconception: disinfection and sterilization are not the same thing.

Sterilization is used for medical instruments, for example, while disinfection is usually sufficient in everyday life.

Where is disinfection used?

Disinfection can be carried out at different levels:

  • Hand and skin disinfection
    • e.g., after/before contact with people or surfaces
  • surface disinfection
    • e.g., tabletops, door handles, bathroom and kitchen surfaces
  • object disinfection
    • e.g., medical devices, smartphones, or everyday objects

Regular disinfection helps to break chains of infection and prevent disease. Our recommendations:

🤝Shaking hands can transmit diseases

In a classic handshake, two hands come into direct contact with each other. Viruses or bacteria are often found on the skin, which we have previously picked up on our hands from door handles, handrails, shopping carts, or even when sneezing. These microorganisms can be easily transmitted during a handshake.

Cold viruses, flu viruses, and noroviruses in particular are transmitted primarily via the hands. If you then touch your face—for example, your nose, eyes, or mouth—pathogens can enter the body and cause infection. That is why regular hand disinfection plays a key role in infection prevention. According to the Hygiene-Empfehlung des Robert Koch-Institut hygienic hand disinfection is considered the most effective single measure worldwide for interrupting chains of infection.

Why is disinfection so important?

Disinfection protects not only ourselves, but also other people around us. It is particularly important in:

    • Households with vulnerable persons
    • Nursing and medical practices
    • Kindergartens, schools, and public institutions
    • Companies with a lot of customer contact
    • Events with large crowds

In short:

Disinfection = Protection against infections

Reduces harmful germs to a safe level
